Question

During your campaign, you talked about beautifying the neighborhoods. What progress have you made?

Answer

I am working both short-term and long-term to help beautify West Hills.

Short term

I worked with several other members of the West Hills Council and several volunteers to beautify our Neighborhood on the Mayor’s Day of Service (May 3, 2008). There were several projects that were funded jointly by the West Hills Neighborhood Council and the Mayors office that took place simultaneously as follows:

  • Tilling the previously damaged soil and planting a garden in front of the West Hills, US Post Office
  • Trimming excess shrubbery on Platt Avenue
  • Planting Hawthorne bushes at Nevada Elementary
  • Planting California native plants as well as adding safety railing to Pomelo Elementary Garden
  • Cleaning up along Roscoe from Fallbrook toward the east

Important Note

We wanted also to clean up the medians on Valley Circle but the cost to pay overtime to close the lanes was prohibitive to the Mayor’s budget and West Hills Neighborhood Council’s budget. We are looking for creative ways to raise the money.

Long term

I am working with a few other council members to try to obtain funds to hire an employee who regularly works to beautify West Hills based on immediate needs. These needs range from hard scaping, painting and refurbishing to street trash pick up and/or gardening/replanting.

I thank you for your interest in improving West Hills. Please contact me if you have any ideas for West Hills beautification or any other issue that will help improve our Neighborhood.
